Avalokitesvara (Kuanyin) as Savior from Perils

The most popular Bodhisattva in China, Kuan-yin is shown here as a four-armed Tibetan manifestation and is flanked by two popular Tibetan deities, the White Tara and the Green Tara. Below, a turbulent sea brimming with various demons and threatening creatures engulfs two devotees who present offerings to Kuan-yin. Nine scenes, each accompanied by a representation of Kuan-yin, depict salvation from these dangers: being hurled from Mt. Sumeru (the Bodhisattva's hand catching the victim); storm; snakes and scorpions; execution; wild animals; poisoning; shipwreck; a burning pit; and being thrown from Mt. Diamond.
